In this project, let’s learn about a simple Stereo Amplifier Circuit. This simple circuit is designed using 4 class B audio amplifier IC’s from Philips – namely TDA1554. Amplifier circuits are usually a pain to design, as you’ve to factor many elements into consideration.

The Design of Stereo Amplifier Circuit

Here is the circuit diagram of a  powerful and high-quality stereo amplifier using IC TDA 1554. The circuit has only very few components. The circuit works best with a 4 Ohm speaker.

TDA1554 is a 4 x 11 watt integrated Class-B audio amplifier from Phillips. Since the IC can be operated from 12V it finds a lot of applications in-car audio systems. The TDA1554 has a lot of good features like thermal protection, reverse polarity protection, load dump protection, short circuit to ground protection, excellent ripple rejection, no switch ON/OFF thud, etc. The IC can be wired in single-ended or BTL (Bridge Tied Load) configuration and here in this circuit the later is used.

Notes

IC must be connected to a heat sink. A  computer cabinet fan can also be used in addition(not necessary). Any way better the cooling better the performance. The circuit roughly draws 5A current at 12 V at full volume. So the power supply must be anything more than 5A. Up to 18 V can be used, which gives a bit more power boost. Commonly used is 12 V.

12V 5A power supply for this project

A simple 12V,5A DC unregulated power supply is shown above. If 6A bridge is not available in your place you can make one using four 6A6 diodes and there will be no difference. 6A6 is a 6 ampere,600V silicon rectifier diode. LED D2 is added in the circuit as a power ON indicator and resistor R2 limits the current through it. Capacitor C7 is the filter capacitor while C8 is an AC bypass capacitor .S1 is the ON/OFF switch. Replacing the 9V transformer with a 12V transformer will increase the output voltage of the power supply to around 16V and you will get some extra power from the amp.

    Hi Caloy the low frequency response with 0.22uF is 14Hz. Whereas the IC it self is designed to roll off below 45Hz. Hence you cannot hear any improvement in amplifier’s low frquency response.

  11. mr.seetharaman im curious with the input coupling capacitors…the input coupling capacitors on the datasheet is 0.22uF w/c i followed…what would be the effect if i changed 0.22uF to 10uF???

    Hi Patrick connect input coupling capacitor (C1 & C2)to 10K potentiometer and use it as volume control (the input impedance of the IC is quite low).

    Hi Caloy you require atleast 4amps power supply to feel the power in dual 22 watts mode. at very low volue 300mA is OK. the quiescent current with 18 volt supply itself is around 170mA so for getting power out you require aleast 2amps.

    Hi Caloy you have done the correct thing. 100k is just the right value to match output of 2822 and input of 1554Q.

    Hi Adnan nothing will happen. Power supply voltage should not increase above safe operating limit of the IC. current requirements depends on the load and the volume kept. even though the power supply is capable of giving higher current the amp will draw only the required current.

    Hi Adnan you cannot. 24-0-24 is ok for one TDA7295.

    Hi Adnan refer specification you can never get 100 watts from this IC. Maximum peak RMS is 80watts for one sec but it can give you 50watts RMS continuous. This is tha capability of this IC.

    Hi Adnan you will get around 100watts per channel but as per the IC datasheet it will get limitted to 80 watts trnsient RMS

    Hi Adnan 24-0-24 4 amps will be ok for stereo amp. For 4 channels it is insufficient the output will get limitted to 40watts if all the four channels are driven together. At high volumes it will be blaring and fully distorted.

    Hi Adnan TDA7295 spec says it can give a peak rms of 80 watts into 8 ohms load just for 1 sec.
    Music Power (RMS) (*) Dt = 1s d = 10%;
    RL = 8W ; VS = ±34V 80Watts
    (***) RL = 4W; VS = ±26V 80watts
    For 8 ohms load you require 24 – 0 – 24 volt AC at 2.5 amps per channel you have to use around 10000uF filter capacitor for both positive and negative voltage to sustain transient.

    Hi Adnan you cannot exceed plus minus 30volt DC. plus minus 40 is absolute maximum voltage and can not be used. you can use a 21 – 0 – 21 volt transformer with 2.5amps rating, which will give you the required plus minus 30 volt DC is sufficient to get 50wats RMS per channel

    Hi Adnan not possible you can bridge only two amplifiers.

    Hi Adnan with 12 volt 1 amp transformer you will be giving 12 watts energy input with 80% efficiency you will get approximately 10 watt out put. that will be 5 watts per channel in dual channel mode, in quad you will get 2.5 watts per channel.
    A good quality 12 volt 5 amp transformer is the most suited one for this IC to get 22 watts per channel into 4 ohms load.
