555 Timer IC Basics

The 555 timer combines a relaxation oscillator, two comparators, an R-S flip-flop, and a discharge capacitor.   R-S Flip-Flop. A pair of cross-coupled transistors is shown in figure. Each collector drives the opposite base through resistance RB. In such circuit one transistor is saturated while the other is cut-off. For instance, if transistor Q1 is saturated, its collector voltage is almost zero. So there is no base drive for transistor Q2 and it goes into cut-off and its collector voltage approaches + VCC. This high voltage produces enough base current to keep transistor Q1 in saturation. On the other hand…

555 Timer IC Pin configuration

The 555 Timer IC is available as an 8-pin metal can, an 8-pin mini DIP (dual-in-package) or a 14-pin DIP. This IC consists of 23 transistors, 2 diodes and 16 resistors. The explanation of terminals coming out of the 555 timer IC is as follows. The pin number used in the following discussion refers to the 8-pin DIP and 8-pin metal can packages.   Pin 1: Grounded Terminal. All the voltages are measured with respect to this terminal. Pin 2: Trigger Terminal. This pin is an inverting input to a comparator that is responsible for transition of flip-flop from set…

Ding-Dong sound generator

Description. This is the circuit diagram of a ding dong sound generator based on two NE555 timer ICs.The circuit is designed to toggle between two adjustable frequencies to produce the ding dong sound. The first NE555 (IC1) is wires as an astable multivibrator operating at 1Hz. The frequency of the second NE555 (IC2) is modulated by the output from the first IC. This is attained by connecting the output of first IC to the control pin (pin5) of the second IC. The tone of the sound depends on the frequency of the second IC and the changeover time depends on…

Infrared intrusion barrier

Description. Here is the circuit diagram of an infrared intrusion detector. Whenever a trespasser cuts the invisible infrared beam an alarm sound will be raised. The arrangement consists of a receiver circuit and a transmitter circuit. The transmitter circuit is based on two TLC555 ICs (IC1 and IC2). The first 555 (IC1) is wired as an astable multivibrator operating at 300Hz.The second 555(IC2) is also wired as an astable multivibrator operating at 36 KHz which can be adjusted by using POT R4.The output of IC1 is given to the reset pin of IC2. So the output of IC2 will be…

LED ramping circuit.

Description. In this circuit the intensity of LED will vary in a ramping fashion. The circuit consists of three ICs: Two 555 timer ICs and one LM393 op-amp. IC1 and IC2 are wired as oscillators to produce 10 KHz and 1 Hz frequencies respectively. These two frequencies are given to the inputs of the op-amp LM393.LM393 is wired as a comparator and its output will be a PWM signal. This PWM signals controls the FET Q1 to drive the LED. The LED will rise from OFF state to full brightness slowly and then slowly fades to OFF state and this operation…

Battery operated mini night lamp

Description. This is the circuit of a low power LED night lamp that will automatically switch OFF at day time. The CMOS timer IC TS555CN is wired as a square wave generator operating at around 5Hz.The output voltage from the IC1 is doubled using the combination of capacitor C2 and diode D2 in order to drive the LED. The LED can be a bright white LED. At day time the resistance of LDR drops to few K Ohms and inhibits the IC from producing oscillations. Circuit diagram with Parts list. Notes. Assemble the circuit on a general purpose PCB. The…

4W Fluorescent lamp driver.

Description. This is a simple 4 W fluorescent lamp driver circuit that can be operated from a 12 V supply. The first part of the circuit includes a NE555 timer IC wired as an astable multivibrator. The output pulses from the IC are amplified by the transistor Q1.The transformer steps up the collector voltage to around 1KVto drive the fluorescent lamp. Before using the circuit, set the R2 at full resistance and switch on the supply, now adjust R2 so that the collector current is 300mA (use a multimeter) and this is the optimum setting for the lamp.Operating the lamp in this…

Selective timer alarm.

Description. A timer circuit using IC 4060 is given here. The IC 4060 is a 14 stage binary counter with a built-in oscillator.R2, R7, C1 are the components that determine the frequency of the oscillator and the outputs will become high one after other and only one at a time. The last five outputs are only used here. The high pulses from the outputs are used to trigger the NE555 IC. Here NE555 is wired as a monostable multivibrator. The buzzer will produce the alarm when the output of IC2 goes high. The duration of the alarm depends on the…
